Is there an age limit?
Museum of Prostitution - Red Light Secrets does have an age restriction, the minimum age is 16. The museum is first and foremost educational and informative and tries to keep explicit imagery to a minimum. However, the museum does deal with an adult subject matter and we suggest parents and/or carers keep this in mind when bringing their minors to the museum and the Red Light District.

Is the museum wheelchair accessible?
No, unfortunately not. Red Light Secrets is located in a monumental canal house, which leaves very little room for adaptations to the building. So, there are some small hallways and stairs. Visitors who are able to move around without a wheelchair, can leave the wheelchair at the entrance. There are plenty of opportunities to sit down throughout the museum.

A visit takes about 45 minutes.

Why do they call it the Red Light District?
The area is known internationally as the Red Light District area because of all the red lights that light up the individual window brothels. This colour of light has become the standard because it masks imperfections of the sex workers. In Dutch we call this area “de Wallen” based on the historical names of the streets in the district, but is also called the ‘Rosse buurt’ in Amsterdam.
What street is the red light district Amsterdam?
Amsterdam has now three window prostitution zones. These are located in buildings along the Ruysdaelkade and Singel and in the area known as De Wallen (Amsterdam’s main red light district).
The name of the main street in de Wallen is called ‘Oudezijds Achterburgwal.’

The district can be visited 24/7. The window brothels are only closed for 2 hours a day between 6am and 8am. Most bars and clubs close at 3 or 4 am on weekends.

Furthermore, the sight of the red lights reflecting on the dark canals looks best when the sun is down. Therefore, the best time to visit the Red Light District is somewhere between 20.00 and 01.00.

Yes, the Red Light District is one of the safest areas in Amsterdam. There is 24-hour video surveillance are lots of police officers in the Red Light District.
Still, be aware of pickpockets. Especially, when it’s busy on the streets. So keep an eye on your belongings and leave your valuables in a safe at the hotel.
Do prostitutes live in the rooms they work in?
No, this is a myth. The working rooms are only for work; you can't live or sleep there.
